How Bechtel ENKA UK LTD. Uses FlippingBook to Elevate Internal Communications

Bechtel and ENKA each boast rich histories, and together, they possess nearly 200 years of combined experience—an impressive feat in today’s competitive landscape. For 35 years, their joint venture has tackled some of the industry’s most challenging motorway projects. In central Serbia, Bechtel ENKA is currently building a 112-km dual carriageway designed for speeds of up to 130 km/h and will be the country’s second major transport artery. It will connect east to west, from Pojate to Preljina, and link the North-South motorway between Serbia's border with Hungary and North Macedonia.

The corridor will fit into a larger transportation network spread throughout the Balkans as part of a regional plan to improve trade links and build ties to Western Europe. The motorway encompasses 37 kilometers of river diversion, 236 kilometers of drainage systems, and 40 culverts. It also features 12 interchanges, 79 bridges, 27 overpasses, and 11 underpasses. Funded by the World Bank, it’s the largest, most read about motorway project in Serbia.

The Morava Corridor Motorway Project’s program management exemplifies Bectel ENKA’s commitment to excellence, representing a complex endeavor that few can undertake.

2024 was a remarkable year for the Morava Corridor Motorway Project, earning triple international awards, including the Environmental Stewardship Award and the Program Management Award from the International Road Federation. In partnership with the Government of Serbia, the project also received the Transport Finance Deal of the Year award from Global Banking & Markets, acknowledging its leadership in infrastructure and sustainable finance for this transformative initiative.

Challenge and Search for Solution

The Morava Corridor Motorway Project employs approximately 4,000 people across 112 kilometers, working in two offices—at various sites along the motorway and river regulation alignment in Serbia. This geographic spread created a communication gap among employees, partners, and stakeholders, emphasizing the need for a reliable way to share news and updates efficiently. As Public Relations and Community Relations Manager Filomena Cornelio tells us:

With a large, dispersed team, staying connected was a challenge. Keeping everyone informed and engaged across the construction zone was a top priority for our leadership team.

The team needed a platform to share project milestones, welcome new hires, celebrate employees, and highlight their community outreach and sustainability efforts. Management saw a digital newsletter as an effective way to help the project team stay connected and keep departments informed about each other’s work.

A mobile-friendly format was cost-effective, eco-friendly, and easily accessible, ensuring it reached employees across all devices, roles, and locations. Research showed that compared to static emails and PDFs, an online flipbook would offer more engagement through interactive elements. It also allowed Filomena and the comms team to tell stories creatively with videos, quizzes, and other dynamic elements.

Following a strong recommendation from a communications colleague at one of our parent companies, we explored FlippingBook and were impressed by its ability to create professional, engaging newsletters.

Solution

Creating the first newsletter was a team effort. A fellow PR lead worked with Filomena to gather stories, milestones, and updates from project departments, ensuring everyone was involved. A graphic designer crafted the layout in Adobe Illustrator, and once uploaded to FlippingBook, the team added interactive elements like interviews, video reports, and a motorway flyover shot by the IT team.

The cover and back pages were beautifully captured by the Morava Corridor Motorway’s Project IT Manager, bringing the project's story to life. Parent companies’ Communications Managers always lent a hand with editorial reviews, helping deliver a polished and engaging product. To keep it fun, the team highlighted employee engagement stories—features all colleagues love.

I liked that FlippingBook could act as a multimedia communication tool, especially being able to upload video content, which is much more engaging than just the flat print.

Once the newsletter was finalized, the team shared the flipbook link through an internal communications email for the Bechtel ENKA Morava Corridor Motorway workforce, on LinkedIn, and within several community groups on the Bechtel Corporation Yammer platform. To monitor engagement and track the response to the new format, Filomena relied on FlippingBook’s analytics.

We really appreciated FlippingBook’s advanced tracking capabilities with metrics like opens, clicks, and time spent on the page. These features enable us to tailor content to employees’ needs and refine our communication strategies further.

Results

The response to Bechtel-ENKA’s digital newsletter has been overwhelmingly positive. Employees and joint venture partners have praised its content and ability to keep people informed. Its sleek, professional design and engaging interactive features also make staying informed an enjoyable experience.

Employees appreciate the engaging content and the enhanced connection with leadership, while joint venture partners view it as a testament to our collaboration and commitment to excellence.

The new, captivating format keeps employees and partners up to date and engaged.
