• How do I work with product lists?

This article is about Flash publication. We highly recommend you to create HTML5 publications instead of Flash ones. You can convert your existing Flash publications to HTML5 using this instruction.

FlippingBook Publisher version 2.6.18 and later allows you to create and edit your product lists outside of FlippingBook Publisher. This is especially useful if you have a large product catalogue that is already available in an offline file and saves you the time and effort required to retype all the data, and manage changes in your file and the FlippingBook Publisher product list. This feature is available in the Professional and Business editions as it is part of the E-Commerce features.

FlippingBook Product Lists can be stored as XML-files. This article describes how to load, save and edit your product list using Microsoft Excel. However, if you prefer to use another application to edit your XML-file, then this should also be possible.

1. The first step in editing your product list is creating one, so you have a file that you can later edit.

Start by opening any project in FlippingBook Publisher and adding a product link.

To do that click on E-Commerce -> Edit Products List… (1) and then click the New Product button (2). Fill out all the fields in the General tab and the Image tab. The contents can be completely fictional, but it is important that all of them are filled out with a valid value as Excel will later create a table based upon this data. Click Create (3).

Save the Products List by clicking on the Folder icon (4) and select Save Products List. In the next window, name it what you want and click ‘save’ again.

2. Next open your product list in Excel.

To change your product list in Excel, start it, go to File -> Open… in the menu bar and browse to the location where you saved the product list you created earlier. By default, the products lists are saved in the folder FlippingBook Publisher\\ in the Documents Library.

Select the XML file, and click Open. A small popup will appear asking you how you want to import. Keep to the default choice “As an XML table” and click OK.

Since the XML file does not refer to schema, Excel will create it for you and show this in a pop-up window that follows. Click OK to close it.

Now you will see the XML file as a datasheet with the default Excel settings, as shown in the screenshot:

3. Now you can edit and save your product list.

You can edit the Excel sheet as you like or copy data into it from another Excel workbook. However, when editing your file, keep the following things in mind:

  • Use commas to denote cents; for example, write 9,99 instead of 9.99.
  • When editing an existing product list, be careful with the ID column and don’t replace IDs carelessly.

The ID is used when you insert a product link in your publication. If you then update the products list, and an ID is assigned to a different product, then the existing links in your publication will point to the new product with this ID.

When you have made all the required changes, save your sheet. Choose XML Data in the ‘Save as type’ dropdown list. You may see a warning that some items cannot be saved in this format, but it can safely be ignored.

4. Load the product list to FlippingBook Publisher

To load your product list back into Publisher, click again on E-commerce -> Edit Products List… (1) and then click on the Folder icon (2). This time, select Load Products List. Select the file that you saved in the previous step, and your modified product list will now be loaded into your publication.

Now you have products that you can place on the pages as products links.

To see how to place them, please refer to this article.
